Now, the Cochin Port Trust and the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command function here. Airport continues to function as naval aviation wing. There are beautiful walkways and jetty’s on this island. My favorite is the “Embarkation Jetty”.  It has a walkway and a jetty close by. A good place to enjoy a leisure walk over evening sun!

Things to do in Nepal

Unquestionably one of the world’s most alluring countries for the adventure traveler, Nepal contains some of the most exciting and unique tours on the planet.
Whether you’re looking for tranquil lakes set around unrivaled landscape scenery, ancient architecture sprawled around quaint, cobbled streets or exhilarating trekking trails, Nepal offers all of this in abundance and at its very best, completely unique to any other country.
All this and then more. Your tours to Nepal will be matched with the overwhelming friendliness of the locals. The Nepalese are renowned for their hospitality and I have to say, I agree. In my eyes they are arguably the warmest, most welcoming nation in the world, making for a very pleasant experience for the traveler.
I can’t express enough how much I enjoyed Nepal but I would love to highlight some of the top things to do there. Alas, here are the top 10 things to do in Nepal:

 Chitwan National Park

Ride an elephant and look out for extraordinary animals in the dense marshlands of Chitwan National Park.
Chitwan National Park, Nepal
Elephant relaxing in the sun, Chitwan, Nepal.
Chitwan means ‘Heart of the jungle’ and penetrating this heart propels you into a world of dense marshland, crocodile infested waters and thick forests containing a diverse selection of wildlife and animals. Safaris in Chitwan certainly shouldn’t be missed.
Located in the south of Nepal, the boiling hot weather is usually a welcome surprise to those who think Nepal is all about snow-capped mountains. Rare reptiles, birds and mammals thrive in Chitwan’s majestic marshlands and indeed lure thousands of tourists each year.
Expect to see monkeys, rhinos, deer, a huge selection of bird-life and if you’re lucky, a royal Bengal tiger. Leopards and sloth-bears aren’t an uncommon encounter, either.

 Lumbini

Buddhist pilgrims head to this birth-place of one of history’s most revered figures: The Buddha.
Lumbini, Nepal
Colorful and peaceful monasteries are a place to worship in the home of the Buddha.
The peaceful atmosphere in Lumbini is testament to the amount of reverence shown to the legend of Siddhartha, aka the Buddha.
Born in Lumbini in approximately 563 BC, the Buddha has created a legend that is manifested by the vast amounts of Buddhist pilgrims that trek to Lumbini each year.
Most people make a brief stopover in Lumbini but it would take you 1 or 2 days to properly explore and absorb all the majestic temples and beautiful scenery and tranquility.

 Gokyo Lakes

With remarkably serene lakes and outstanding views of Mt Everest, treks of the Gokyo Lakes are truly memorable.

The perfect scenery, monstrous mountains and spectacularly serene lakes
At the head of the Dudh Kosi Valley, the Gokyo Lakes region offers a seductive alternative to the more iconic trails of Mt Everest.
With more time to acclimatize and a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path trail, the Gokyo Lakes hike is arguably one of the most appealing options for the adventure trekker.
Absorb the breath-taking views of Mt Everest and trail around dazzling lakes, overlooked from the spectacular panoramas atop beautiful alpine campsites. This trek through the Sherpa heartland is not to be missed.

Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur, with its medieval alleys and famous wood carvings, is an essential visit on your tours to Nepal.
Bhaktapur, Nepal
Bhaktapur contains enchanting alleyways, charming courtyards and ancient houses.
Stroll through the charming medieval alleys of Bhaktapur and you will feel like you have traveled back in time in this well preserved city.
Located in the east corner of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur showcases the very best of Nepal’s ancient charms, in particular the culture and work of the Newari people (the indigenous people of the Kathmandu valley).
Our Nepal destination expert, Krishna, loves Bhaktapur for its beautiful wood carvings, the attractive traditional alleyways and the peace of having no traffic.
Bhaktapur’s rich culture, ancient temples, and fine, intricate carvings are just a few reasons why you too should be caught by its majestic lure. Not to mention the fantastic backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

Langtang Trek
The Langtang Trek in Nepal is the alternative trekking masterpiece, showcasing Nepal’s greenery and budding wildlife.
Nepal trek
Breathtaking views on the Langtang Trek (Tibet on the left, Nepal on the right)
Although relatively unheard of and less iconic than the other world-famous trekking trails in Nepal, the Langtang trek offers superb nature treks that follow the gushing Langtang river through splendid verdant mountains and forests.
Tours for this trek are sold in Kathmandu and consist of an 8 hour bus ride to the start of the trail and can entail anywhere between 6-16 days of trekking, depending on your time preferences and allowances.
The views throughout the whole trek, the therapeutic river sounds, the delightful food along the way, the people we met, the awe-inspiring backdrops and the challenge of the trek all culminated in the Langtang trek being a truly remarkable experience. For more unique tours other than those famous Everest tours, check out our India tours and see what hidden treks you can find there.

Kathmandu

From the Tourist center of Thamel to the majestic temples of Durbar Square, capital Kathmandu packs a hard punch for the traveler.
Durbar Square, Kathmandu
Durbar Square is filled with opulent palaces and enchanting temples around every corner.
Arriving in Kathmandu is a pleasant shock for those travelling to Nepal straight from home. The old-world streets, intense, bustling markets and crumbling architecture is a  beautiful and captivating embrace on first arrival.
Settle in and you will discover the beauty of laid-back Kathmandu, the breath-taking historic capital of Nepal. Located at a dizzying 4,600 ft, Kathmandu is the gateway to all of Nepal’s main attractions, with all treks and hiking trails available to book here.
For me, the buzz around Kathmandu was electrifying, swathing with excited trekkers, fun-loving locals and ceaselessly providing its visitors with a rugged city that has by no means lost any of its historic charm.
It is simply stunning to kick back and relax on one of many of Kathmandu’s roof-top terraces, where either some therapeutic Tibetan music or the omnipresent Bob Marley tunes reverberate around the relaxed, sun-drenched rooftops.
Aditya, author of Nepal blog ‘Gorgeous Nepal’ thinks Kathmandu is the perfect place for the tourist to discover Nepal’s wonderful cuisine, from the sumptuous snack of steamed momos (accompanied by a great chili sauce) to the dreamy traditional dish – Dal Baht (two of my favorite foods in the world too). Check out Gorgeous Nepal’s ‘Top 7 must-try foods in Nepal‘.

 Annapurna Circuit

Trek one of Nepal’s most celebrated circuits and absorb the ridiculously beautiful scenery from Poon Hill.
Annapurna Nepal
One of many distant peaks found on the Annapurna circuit.
The popular trail in the Annapurna region, known as the Annapurna Circuit, winds through patchwork valleys, dense mossy forests and past icy waterfalls (great for a refreshing stop-off to cool your face).
Around every corner is a tantalizing glimpse of the high mountains and stunning whole horizons of which will be revealed to you as you reach the high points of your trek.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Panorama trek is a colorful short foray into the Annapurna region. The trek, through the Annapurna foothills to the view point on Poon Hill, offers all the best of trekking in Nepal.

 Patan

Across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu, Patan displays some of the finest collections of temples in the world.
Patan Nepal
Crowds gather for Krishna festival, Patan, Nepal.
An hour outside of Kathmandu, and just the other side of the Bagmati River, you’ll find the beautiful temple-saturated city of Patan, an ancient city containing a myriad of  old brick lanes leading to unimaginably pretty squares and courtyards.
I went to Patan in August and caught the atmospheric celebrations of Krishna, where packed Patan squares (pictured) were filled with people watching holy rituals and traditional reenactments take place. Like Kathmandu, the rooftop cafe’s offered the perfect vantage point to survey the electrifying scene, after, of course, meandering through the crowds of people and mixing in with the vibrant colors on display.

Everest Base Camp

The most iconic attraction in Nepal and one of the world’s most daring feats, climbing Mt Everest is a remarkable achievement.
Everest base camp
Climbing the monumental Mt Everest predictably provides incredible views, like this one. Photo by Göran Höglund
Not everyone can climb all the way to the top of the almighty Everest, a feat that a) takes years of preparing for and b) isn’t feasible for the majority of us (costs around $11,000, and that’s excluding airfare prices to Lukla and other factors), so the next best achievement is climbing to Everest Base Camp.
Get a glimpse of the beauty of your upcoming experience on your exhilarating flight to Lukla, before commencing on your trek of a lifetime. Through the 16 days of trekking to Base Camp and back you will experience different challenges and diverse scenery.
From lush rhododendron forests and stone walled traditional villages at the bottom, to the Sherpa Land of Namche and all the way to the village of Phortse Gaon where you can witness magical peaks of Everest and Nuptse and various other mountain ranges.
Need it be said that climbing to the Everest Base Camp requires a lot of training to reach a very high level of fitness. The camp lies at an altitude of 5,364 meters and is more of a rest point for Climbers looking to climb the rest of Mt Everest.

 Pokhara

Whether exploring the surrounding mountains or fishing on Lake Phewa, days in Pokhara are filled with delightful activities and explorations.
lake phewa, Pokhara
A serene ride on Lake Phewa offers an idyllic afternoon surrounded by nature and nice scenery.
Everyone that travels to Nepal will agree that Pokhara is one of those gems that you feel you must revisit a number of times in your lifetime, and it’s almost always included in their ‘favorite cities’ list. It’s certainly in mine.
This charming lakeside town offers a whole array of activities, from the famous paragliding cliff to hiring pedalos and fishing gear and having a relaxed day out on the lake. Pokhara’s attractions are endless. Rows of cafe’s align the beautiful Lake Phewa and are a nice spot to laze in the sun and absorb the romantic scenery on offer.
Pokhara also provides the perfect opportunity to hire a bike and zoom off into the sunset up any of the surrounding mountains to get a scintillating panoramic aerial view of the lake. I recommend driving up the mountain to Sarangkot, a nearby village that is also nice to get lost in and meet the friendly locals.

MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

Every country has its marvels and breathtaking landscapes, but these ten are blessed with a rare package of outstanding natural beauty and man-made wonders that enhance their territories with everything from beautiful cities to timeless villages, magnificent parks and pristine scenery. They are countries that offer a variety of sights and an abundance of inspiration from man and nature.

1 | ITALY

Italy
AMALFI COAST, ITALY

The world's most beautiful city, the most inspiring cultural treasures, and magnificent scenery: Nowhere else in the world will you find a bigger concentration of beauty. There's VeniceFlorence and Rome with their varied architecture, the natural masterpiece that is Tuscany with its rolling hills, vineyards and snow-peaked mountains. Then there's the perfect naturalist painting that is the Amalfi Coast or Lake Maggiore and the Alps and you get the sense that no country on Earth offers as much beauty anywhere you turn as Italy.

2 | SPAIN

Spain
JAÉN (ANDALUSIA), SPAIN

The most common image of Spain is of the dreadful overdevelopment of the Costa del Sol or of the coastline of some of the Balearic Islands, but Spain is so much more than that. It's perhaps the most diverse country in the world, with everything from white Mediterranean villages to sophisticated urban centers. You won't find a city with a greater sense of individuality than Barcelona, and from the Pyrenees to Andalusia, Spain could serve as the backdrop for any kind of film, book or painting. It's also the world's most seductive country, passionate about living the good life reflected on grand plazas in even the smaller cities, in well-preserved historic centers, and in the smallest of villages perched on hilltops. To top it all off, there are some of the world's grandest, most powerful and incomparable architectural treasures, from the Alhambra to the Great Mosque of Cordoba.

3 | FRANCE

France
CHÂTEAU DE CHENONCEAU (LOIRE VALLEY), FRANCE

Paris exudes the most perfect atmosphere of cultural grandeur but although the capital gets all the attention, France offers so much more. Villages with abundant Old World charm are all over the country, from around the magnificent Loire Valley to verdant Provence. Then there's the glamorous Riviera and if you want to see the world's greatest palace (Versailles) and museum (the Louvre), here they are. But France is also a country of world-class living in outdoor cafes, in perfectly-preserved towns and in wine-producing regions such as Bordeaux and Champagne. If that's not enough, see the majesty of Mont St. Michel, the numerous chateaux all over the country and the spectacular panorama of the Chamonix valley.

4 | AUSTRALIA

Australia
ULURU-KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK, AUSTRALIA

Australia is more than a country, it's a continent and still more than that. It's its own world, from the Outback and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park with its world-renowned stone monolith to the Kakadu National Park. It's in fact wild parks and a wide range of landscapes that make Australia so extraordinary, from the Mornington Peninsula National Park facing the open sea to the Great Barrier Reef that's one of the natural wonders of the world, to the unspoiled tropical Whitsunday Islands, but then there's Sydney and its harbor, one of the most beautiful and iconic urban areas. Australia has it all, to be admired before or after a ride down the Great Ocean Road.

5 | GREECE

Greece
SANTORINI, GREECE

The Greek Islands on the blue waters of the Aegean Sea are home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches. They're the first images of the country but then there's the majestic Mt. Olympus, extraordinary Meteora, and ancient ruins around the country. While Athens disappoints those looking for aesthetic inspiration, Greece is a country that truly satisfies all the senses and it's understandable how the idea of so many gods originated here.

6 | PORTUGAL

Portugal
ALGARVE, PORTUGAL

For the pristine natural wonders of the volcanic Azores alone, Portugal would be on this list. Then there's the "floating garden" that is Madeira, the dramatic coastline and mystical capes of the mainland, the serene plains of the Alentejo with the stunningly-sited white medieval vilages of MarvĂŁo and Monsaraz, the Peneda-GerĂŞs National Park, or the perfect collaboration of man and nature in the magic fantasy of Sintra and verdant Douro Valley. And while the old centers of Lisbon and Porto are inexplicably rundown and stubbornly neglected, it's hard to match their scenic beauty with their grand riverside settings. Everything is in a small scale but when all combined it's impressive how so much diverse beauty somehow fits in such a tiny country that seems to be a favorite of the sun.

7 | USA

USA
THE GRAND CANYON, USA

It has the ugliest cities in the developed world linked by shopping mall roads of fast food joints, car lots, billboards, cheap hotels and soulless suburbs (with populations obliviously living the American nightmare), but when it comes to nature, America really is the beautiful. There are the Hawaiian islands, the epic scale of the Grand Canyon, the extraordinarily clear waters of Lake Tahoe, California's Big Sur, the wildlife in Alaska, the breathtaking scenery of Monument Valley or of Yellowstone, Yosemite and the other great national parks, the forestland of the Great Smoky Mountains... The list of natural wonders seems to go on forever and then there's San Francisco to save the country on the offer of beauty in an urban setting.

8 | BRAZIL

Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

It has one of the world's most beautiful cities (Rio de Janeiro) and one of the ugliest(SĂŁo Paulo) but Brazil really is blessed by nature. The Amazon is incomparable, impossible to begin to imagine its magnitude, and the horseshoe-shaped falls of Iguaçu regularly watched by a rainbow is one of the world's most breathtaking sights. The colonial baroque architecture of the northeast with their golden interiors mixed with singular traditions give it one of the world's most soulful atmospheres, and if the country's other major cities weren't so bland (Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, etc.), Brazil would actually rank higher on this list.

9 | SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa
TABLE MOUNTAIN, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town is one of the world's most beautiful cities (let's just say it's number 11 on our top 10 list), and the Kruger National Park is one of the most memorable experiences on the planet for anyone who visits. South Africa offers epic diversity of landscapes, from the Blyde River Canyon to the Drakensberg Mountains. With all of that it's almost easy to forget that it's also a country full of problems with a capital city that is best avoided, but escape to the Cape and grab your camera to photograph all in between and you'll be savoring one of the most awe-inspiring territories on the planet.

10 | GERMANY

Germany
BAVARIA, GERMANY

Yes, Germany. Perhaps the world's most underrated country, Germany is a place of fairytales and architectural jewels. They're not necessarily found in the largest cities (Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, or Cologne which are more vibrant than beautiful) but Munich has its charms and smaller cities such as Dresden, Leipzig and Potsdam have been preserved or restored to fairytale eye candy. But the real storybook Germany is found all along Bavaria's Romantic Road with its wealth of unbelievable castles, in the Alps' gorgeous lakes and mountains, in the magical land of the Rhine with its vineyards or in the enchanting Black Forest. Begin to tour the country and you'll discover a land of constant surprises, from the university city of Heidelberg, to old Bremen or Bamberg, to the wonderfully preserved medieval towns of Regensburg and Rothenburg.

THE BEST BEACHES IN THE WORLD

THE BEST BEACHES IN THE WORLD

We can all agree that after months of polar vortexes and a winter that refused to quit, the idea of hitting the beach sounds pretty terrific, right? Well, we're almost there. And to help get the ball rolling, we rounded up our favorite beaches in the world.
N

Ipanema Beach

Where: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Why it made our list: There's a reason bikinis and waxes are named "Brazilian". The city's as sizzling as its sexy locals, and this renowned party beach is your chance to totally notstare at them from behind your aviators.
Bonus: Vendors along the boardwalk sell caipirinhas, and there're plenty of waterfront gyms for pumping your pecs before starting that long, slow stroll down the beach.
FLCIKR USER DIDIER BAERTSCHIGER

Anse Source d’Argent

Where: La Digue, Republic of Seychelles
Why it made our list: Its towering cliffs and pink sand make it one of the most photographed beaches in the world.
Bonus: La Digue, specifically its Veuve Nature Reserve, is the last place on earth where you can find the rare black paradise flycatcher bird, of which there are only about 100 left. Okay, so that's not much of a bonus unless your favorite movie is The Big Year, but consider it your fun fact of the day.

Hidden Beach

Where: The Marieta Islands by Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Why it made our list: LOOK AT IT! While no longer as hidden as the name might suggest, this beach is rumored to have been formed by the Mexican military detonating test bombs in the early 1900s.
Bonus: Think of the street cred you'll get by dropping a reference to the secret, underground beach you just got back from vacationing on. Also, there's a water tunnel you have to pass through to get there.

Plage de St. Jean

Where: St. Barths, French Caribbean
Why it made our list: Located at the end of the island's airport (which claims to have one of the world's shortest landing strips at 2,100 feet), this beautiful beach comes with anair of danger; in 2009, a plane ran out of runway and crashed on it. Thankfully, no one was injured.
Bonus: A playground for the super rich and mega famous, expect to spy celebs sipping martinis. Or, at the least, planes taking off and landing above your beach chair.
MICHAEL MCCARTHY

7 Mile Beach

Where: Negril, Jamaica
Why it made our list: Flanked by epic cliffs, it's one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the world. Although, it's actually only SIX miles long, just so you know.
Bonus: There’s a Margaritaville right on the beach! Kidding. Instead, hit Rick's CafĂ© -- considered one of the best beach bars in the world, it's perched atop the aforementioned cliffs.
