Home to Bengal tigers, Indian leopards and bison, sloth bears, sambar deer, Smooth-coated otters and the Indian Giant squirrels, the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is very interesting but extremely picturesque to view at. If lucky, reptile lovers will be able to view Indian pythons, king cobras, and even the endemic Bufo koyanansis frog. Located in the Satara district, the sanctuary is spread out 423 kms within the Western Ghats while the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve and Chandoli National Park are its immediate neighbours. Making the sanctuary lush and green are the three rivers, Koyana, Kandati and Solashi which travel through it.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
As the name suggests you will find tigers in majority here. Located in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is the oldest sanctuary in Maharashtra. Named by the local tribals of the area after their god, “Tadoba” or “Taru” while ‘Andhari’ refers to the river Andhari flowing within the regions of Tadoba and Andhari, this reserve also has temple below a huge tree dedicated to God Taru. Locals and tourists visit this temple during the annual fair event held between the months of December and January.

A must visit for avid trekkers as the Kalsubai peak is the highest one within the Western Ghats. Located in Akola district of Ahmednagar, this sanctuary houses many mammals such as jungle cat, mongoose, hyena, wolf, wild boar, sambar, hare along with porcupine, fan throated lizard, turtles, and a couple of water birds such as herons, egrets, water hens, black ibis and more.
